Questions
What Tucson seniors ask us most often
Does it cost anything to work with Tucson Senior Insurance?
Nothing. Working with Tucson Senior Insurance costs you zero dollars. Carriers pay agents a commission that's already baked into the plan price, so whether you enroll yourself online or sit down with us at our 85719 office, your premium is identical.
When can I first enroll in Medicare?
You get a seven-month window: the three months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after. We see plenty of Tucson retirees from the University of Arizona and Davis-Monthan wait until the last minute, then scramble. Sign up in month one or two and your coverage starts right on time.
Can I keep my current doctors?
With Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan, yes, any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, including specialists at Banner University Medical Center or TMC HealthCare. With a Medicare Advantage plan, it comes down to the network, so we check your exact doctors and hospital against each plan's current directory before you sign up, not after.
Is Medicare Advantage better than Medigap?
Neither wins for everybody. Medigap costs more each month but almost nothing when you actually get care, and it has no network, useful if you split time between Tucson and somewhere up north as a snowbird. Advantage costs less monthly, uses copays and a network built around systems like Banner, TMC or Northwest, and usually bundles in drug coverage and extras. Your doctors, your prescriptions and how much budget swing you can handle should decide it.
What happens if I don't sign up for Part B on time?
Unless you're still covered through active employment, Medicare tacks on 10% to your Part B premium for every full 12 months you went without it, and that extra charge usually sticks around for as long as you have Part B. Run the numbers on our Part B penalty calculator before you decide to wait.
I don't take any prescriptions. Do I still need Part D?
Usually, yes. Go 63 days or more without creditable drug coverage after you're first eligible, and Medicare adds a permanent Part D penalty to every plan you buy afterward. A cheap standalone plan now almost always beats paying that penalty for the rest of your life.
Do I have to change plans every year?
No, but check every year. Networks, drug tiers and copays reset every January 1, and a plan that worked great in Rita Ranch this year might drop a pharmacy you use next year. Fifteen minutes each fall is usually all it takes to confirm you're still in the right plan.
Which hospitals do Tucson Medicare plans use?
Most Tucson Medicare Advantage plans build their network around Banner University Medical Center Tucson, TMC HealthCare, Northwest Medical Center, and Carondelet's St. Joseph's and St. Mary's campuses. Because Tucson has a heavy population of retired UA staff, Davis-Monthan retirees and winter visitors competing for appointments, network access can shift plan to plan and year to year, so we confirm your specific doctors before you enroll, not after.
Can you help if I'm under 65 and on Medicare due to disability?
Yes. Arizona's rules for under-65 Medicare beneficiaries, especially around Medigap access, work differently than they do for people who qualify at 65. We'll walk through exactly what's available to you in Pima County.
Do you serve towns outside Tucson?
Yes. We cover all of Pima County, including Oro Valley, Marana, Dove Mountain, Green Valley, Sahuarita, Vail, Catalina and Corona de Tucson, plus ZIP codes like 85704, 85718 and 85614 around Green Valley's large retirement communities.
